Translators Associations: AAIT

Translating in the Peach State

Translators Association: AAITThe Atlanta Association of Interpreters and Translators (AAIT) is a non-profit organisation. It serves as a link to Atlanta’s international community, and farther.

According to the goals stated on the website, one of AAIT’s missions as a translators association is the promotion of Translation and Interpretation as professional occupations, at the same time as it supports “their competency, skills, proficiency and expertise”. Other objectives include the “continuing education and skills building” programmes for its members and also to “provide language resources to individuals, businesses, organizations and government agencies” both locally and abroad.

This translation association from Georgia, which is also known as the Peach State, offers several services, such as certified and registered court interpreters, professionals – both interpreters and translators – specialised in medicine, law, business and finance, science, literature and marketing. They also do proofreading and localising websites and software.

In educational terms, the AAIT offers training seminars – offered annually – on “cultural awareness, diversity and language instruction”, as well as “customized language programs and education for companies and government agencies”. There are also occasional networking opportunities with guest speakers.

The AAIT guarantees its members to have a high level of education, outstanding literary and verbal skills and fluency both in source and target languages. They are also deeply qualified in terms of “foreign cultural customs, business practices and etiquette”.

The AAIT offers a database of professional translators and interpreters working in many languages, both verbal and written. There are also discounts for members in many professional and educational events. As a member, you also have access to newsletter archives, bylaws and minutes, job postings, etc.

There is also Bridges, AAIT’s quarterly newsletter, with information on activities and news on seminars, workshops, training sessions and other opportunities.

AALS Professional Ethics Award

This award, presented by Atlanta’s translators association, intends to recognise both translation and interpretation professionals in Georgia “who exemplify high standards of ethical behaviour” in the job, especially when it comes to giving response to “specific crises and challenges”.

Keep in mind that in Georgia, as well as the rest of the United States of America, English is the official language. It’s the most widely spread tongue worldwide, with around 328 million native English speakers (the actual figures are estimated to be much higher). The population of Georgia is of almost 10 million people.
