Translation Associations Europe: APCI
A stepping stone for police and court interpreters
 The Association of Police & Court Interpreters (APCI) was founded in 1974. It's a professional association of independent, freelance interpreters working within the Criminal Justice System.
This translation association based in London aims to raise standards in the profession and foster good relations between its members and the users of their services. It also provides a forum for mutual support and advice to its members on matters relating to their profession.
By being members of this translation association, interpreters are used by many branches of the public service, including the Ministry of Justice, HM Courts Service, the Metropolitan Police, the Crown Prosecution Service, HM Revenue and Customs, HM Prison Service, the Probation Service and the Department of Work and Pensions.

All interpreters working in the Criminal Justice System in England and Wales, as well as Scotland and Northern Ireland, are welcome into this translation association. If that includes you, your application shall most likely be approved. But there are some requirements you must respond to.
APCI's membership should be seen as a stepping stone in the already successful career of an interpreter with considerable experience as both a linguist and a practitioner in the Criminal Justice System (CJS).
Applicants must have a first degree or postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject; gather recommendation of competence and good practice from two referees; have three years' experience as an interpreter within the CJS; work regularly for the police and the courts; and have 400 hours of proven experience for these entities and 100 assignments.
Also, you would have to have full or rare language status on the NRPSI in at least one language and present a work history clean of proven complaints within the CJS field. Having a high standard of conduct in the field with a solid ethical understanding helps as well.
Once your documentation is complete, the APCI will invite you to an interview.
Finally, the current subscription is £100 per year and the application form in PDF format is available online.
