Translators Associations Asia Pacific: MITA
Translating and Interpreting for Medicine
The Medical Interpreters and Translators Association (MITA) was founded in 1993, in Tokyo. Its aim is to promote the interests of medical communication specialists that work with the English and the Japanese languages.
This translators association holds meetings in the Japanese capital once every month – every third Wednesday of the month, from 6:30 to 8 pm. In case you wish to attend one of MITA’s meetings, you should get in touch with the association, providing your email address.
During those meetings, members of MITA present the audience with interventions on topics of interest to medical communication specialists in a wide range of fields, “including translation, editing, interpreting and education”. There are also discussions on those topics. All upcoming meetings are announced on MITA’s website, but you can also take a look at what have been the themes of past meetings. These include ways to teach quotations, paraphrasing and summarising, teaching oral case presentations and designing and preparing written communications.
The people in charge of this Japanese translation association stress that “if you live near Tokyo, and are interested in Japanese/English medical communications, MITA may be for you”.
MITA has created a mailing list in order to give its members the possibility of sharing information in a more practical way, as well as to discuss issues that concern Japanese / English medical communication. If you wish to subscribe to the list, there is a form available on MITA’s website.
If you wish to become a member of the Japanese Medical Interpreters and Translators Association, the only conditions are that you are interested in English / Japanese translation or interpreting, that you are able to attend on a regular basis the monthly meetings held in Tokyo, and that you are willing to participate actively in presentations and discussions. Experience is not of essence. Moreover, MITA membership comes free of charge.
MITA requests that, if you are interested, you should send an email identifying yourself, with “a few words about your interest in medical translation or interpreting”.
MITA’s members include several professionals other than translators and interpreters. There are also editors, teachers, physicians, etc. The country of origin also varies, MITA has members from Japan, but also from the USA, the UK, Australia and Belgium.
The Fukuoka Chapter
MITA also has a section in Fukuoka. It was created in 2008, from the idea that this group would be “an excellent way to keep valuable information flowing and connections growing in this area”.
Meetings are held every first Friday of each month, from 5:30 to 7 pm, at the Kyushu University Hospital Campus.
Keep in mind that the official language of Japan is Japanese, a language spoken by over 130 million people in its country of origin and in Japanese immigrant communities.
